Daily album #11 - Long Way To Go

It's Thursday - Israeli jazz day :)

Amit Friedman's second album is so lyrical, energetic and fun. I just love his music and his playing always fills me with joy.

This time the link is not to the full album, but to a live performance of the quintet: Amit Friedman (ts,ss), Tom Oren (p), Gilad Abro (b), Amir Bar-Akiva (d) ,Roni Ivrin (prc).

BTW - you can hear them tonight at Givatay'im Theater !

Daily album #10 - You better believe it!

I discovered Gerald Wilson's Orchestra from the great box set of his pacific recordings, issued on Mosaic records.

Gerald was a trumpet player but also used to write for some of the best big bands in the forties and fifties, such as: Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie.
His own orchestra (a 17 piece orchestra) swings, grooves and sounds nothing less than those of the bands he used to work for.

This is his first album of his LA orchestra, recorded in 1961 for Pacific records.

Just to name a few of the great musicians playing here: Teddy Edwards and Harold Land (ts), Buddy Collette (as, cl, fl), Joe Maini (as), Richard "Groove" Holmes (org), Mel Lewis (d)

Daily album #9 - Paul Motian and the Electric Bebop Band

The first album of the EBBB (Electric bebop band), leaves no doubt that Paul Motian was a genius, giving beautiful modern form to bebop classics from Parker, Powell, Gillespie, Monk ,Dameron and others.
It sounds so fresh and live.

The original band features:
Paul Motian (d), Joshua Redman (ts), Brad Schoeppach (g, left side) and Kurt Rosenwinkel (g, right side), Stomu Takeishi (b).

Bird lives !

Daily album #8 - Candy

The only quartet album of the great trumpeter Lee Morgan.

Recorded on late 1957 / Early 1958 for Blue Note records just between two of the label's very famous albums in which Morgan participated: Coltrane's Blue Train and Blakey's Moanin'.
Such and amazing sound, phrasing and grace.

Lee Morgan (tp), Sonny Clark (p), Doug Watkins (b), Art Taylor (d)

Daily album #5 - Sonny Rollins, Vol.1

This is the first album Sonny Rollins recorded for BlueNote records, with the great Donald Byrd, Wynton Kelly, Gene Ramey and Max Roach.

A hard-bop classic from 1957 (Recorded on Dec. 1956), in which Rollins continues the legacy of the Brownie & Roach quintet, of which he was part.

In the coming years Rollins will invent the "power trio", take a two year break from recording and performing, practice like mad, change direction and come back as a revised Rollins, but in the meantime, let's enjoy this fantastic album.

Daily album #4 - Mingus Dynasty

Charles Mingus - Mingus Dynasty (Columbia records, 1959).
Fantastic and somehow forgotten album by Mingus and his band. This album is much more orchestrated than most of Mingus' albums, and contains some of the his best compositions.
I bought this album after hearing the "Mingus Big Band" playing tribute to the music from it. But the source is even better.
Just take a look at some of the amazing musicians playing here:
John Handy, Booker Ervin, Benny Golson, Jerome Richardson - Saxes
Richard Williams, Don Ellis - trumpets
Jimmy Knepper – trombone
Roland Hanna - piano
Charles Mingus - bass
Dannie Richmond – drums
Teddy Charles - vibes

Daily album #3 - Duet

One of the albums that first took me off the Verve / BN / Prestige track. This is a magical piano / tenor duet with Abdullah Ibrahim (AKA: $) and Archie Shepp.
A true must.

Daily album #2 - True Blue and Silver's Blue

From 1974 on Xanadu with an amazing lineup:
Al Cohn & Dexter Gordon - tenor saxophone
Blue Mitchell & Sam Noto - trumpet
Barry Harris - piano
Sam Jones - bass
Louis Hayes - drums
I love how they take the head and the tail of Art Blakey's Messengers "Lady Bird" (on Cafe Bohemia album) and play it simultaneously - saxes against trumpets.
